Bangladesh starts oceanographic expedition for IIOE-2

International Indian Ocean Expedition-2 (IIOE-2) is an initiative taken by a folks of scientists, institutions, Universities and organizations, who work sedulously to understand the hydrodynamics, circulations and the processes going on as well as to explore and exploit the natural resources in the Indian Ocean. Department of Oceanography, International Centre for Ocean Governance (ICOG) at University of Dhaka with the help of Bangladesh Navy started to make their historic endeavor by undertaking four successful cruises in the Bay of Bengal as a part of IIOE-2 in 2016 and 2017. IIOE – 2 Winter Cruise – 2017 (Leg-2)

Department of Oceanography, University of Dhaka and ICOG made another cruise in 2017 using Bangladesh Navy ship BNS TURAG as a consecutive study of northern Bay of Bengal with special focuses on Swatch of No-Ground. The cruise was conducted from 11-18 February, 2017 in the northern Bay of Bengal (BoB).

During the cruise an area of 11,000 km√were surveyed between 20⁰ 40” to 21⁰ 50” North Latitude and 89⁰ 25” to 90⁰ 15” East Longitude. This leg also focused on the area around the Swatch of No-Ground, northern Bay of Bengal (the

IIOE – 2 Winter Cruise – 2017 (Leg-1)

Winter Cruise-2017 (Leg-1) was jointly participated by the scientists, teachers, students of Department of Oceanography and International Centre for Ocean Governance (ICOG) of University of Dhaka using Bangladesh Navy Ship BNS KARATOA.

During the cruise were surveyed an area of 11,000 km√ between 20⁰ 20” to 21⁰ 15” North Latitude and 89⁰ 15” to 90⁰ 5” East Longitude water samples were collected from 48 stations, besides, CTD was casted in 14 stations. Leg-1 focused on the area around the Swatch of No-Ground, northern Bay of Bengal (the shallow Bangladeshi coast).
